Vision Loss & Your Rights: You Don’t Have to Navigate Alone

January marks Glaucoma Awareness Month, and we recently celebrated World Braille Day on January 4th. These dates serve as a vital reminder of the millions of Americans navigating the world with vision loss—and the unique challenges they face when accessing the benefits and rights they deserve.

At California Disability Advocates, we know that a diagnosis of glaucoma or significant vision loss is life-altering. Beyond the physical adjustment, there is a complex "system" of legal rights, workplace accommodations, and disability benefits that can feel impossible to navigate alone.

How We Advocate For Your Rights

Whether you are seeking Social Security Disability benefits or fighting for fair treatment in the workplace, our mission is to ensure your voice is heard. Here is how we support you:

Demystifying the Blue Book: We help you understand the specific visual field and acuity requirements the SSA uses to determine disability eligibility.

Securing Accommodations: We advocate for your right to accessible materials and a fair environment.

Cutting Through Red Tape: We handle the complex legal hurdles so you can focus on your health.

Featured Blog: Understanding the Process

The Disability Determination Process When your initial Social Security disability claim is filed, it is routed to your local field office for a caseworker review. From there, it is sent to Disability Determination Services (DDS) for a critical medical and vocational evaluation. Knowing how your application moves through the system is the first step in a successful claim.

Your vision might be changing, but your rights remain the same.

If you or a loved one are struggling to secure the support you need due to vision loss, let’s talk. Our team is dedicated to ensuring you get the advocacy you deserve.

In solidarity,
